murdered in a slaughter in Rio
By O DIA (brazilian newspaper), April 1, 2005 One more slaughter shocks Rio de Janeiro. At least 30 people were shot, last night between 9 pm and 10 pm, in the cities of Nova Iguaçu and Queimados, in a place called Baixada Fluminense in the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There are indications that the slaughter was done by a strong-armed group in a Volkswagen. According to preliminary investigations of police department, the massacre is linked to the arrestment of military policemen accused of throwing a human head inside a building of the police department, during the night of last Wednesday. According to the police, the number of victims can be much bigger. Till last night there were 27 but this morning more 3 were confirmed. The attack started in the pub Caíque, in Nova Iguaçu. All people inside the pub were shot, including children, by the murderers that entered the place shooting and breaking things. 9 people died and 2 are injured. Six died in the place, including the pub owner, Elisabeth Soares de Oliveira, 43 years old, and her son, Felipe Soares de Oliveira, 13 years old. The other victims are: Jaílton Vieira da Silva, 25, Douglas Brasil de Paula, 14, Jonas de Lima Silva, 19, and Robson Albino, 25. Other 3 victims died in the Hospital of Posse, where 2 other people remain heavily injured. The slaughter in Nova Iguaçu and Queimados alerted battalions of the military police in all Baixada Fluminense that was enclosed. The general commander of military police, colonel Hudson de Aguiar, determined in the end of last night that all policemen returned to their battalions. Even policeman that were off duty were convoked. Hudson
de Aguiar said that the authors of the massacre are going to be identified,
arrested, expelled from the police and punished by law: “for more than
20 years police had not entered Baixada to elucidate crimes. Now we have
the courage to do this. Following the instructions of the Security Secretary
we will continue to cut our own body. We must moralize our corporation”,
he stated.
